Yee-haw! Ms. K’s 3rd grade class had a very special visitor all the way from Texas last week, Ms. K’s mom came to talk with our students!
She brought Texas culture right into our classroom and helped students connect her stories directly to what they have learned this year.
Here is a look at their Texas-sized adventure:
Tornado Alley: Students revisited their extreme weather unit from shared reading as she shared what it is really like to experience these storms.
Rodeo History: The class learned all about the origins of the rodeo and how this famous tradition came to be.
Cowboy Crafts: Everyone tapped into their creative side by designing their own colorful cowboy boots.
Texas Legends: She shared the legend of the bluebonnet (the Texas state flower), which perfectly reminded the students of their unit on tall tales and how legends are made.
Thank you so much to Ms. K’s mom for visiting us and bringing learning to life for our third graders!

2nd grade has been working on creating an advertisement about their favorite book from Shared Reading/ELA. Students had the choice of either creating a poster ad, or a video. Yesterday we went to 1st grade to share our ads to help get them excited about the books they will be reading next year, as well as to answer any questions they may have about what 2nd grade is like.

The countdown to promotion is officially on! Today, our 4th and 5th graders came together for a very special school tradition. Every year, our 4th graders interview the rising 5th graders to create personalized acrostic poems for them as a sending-off gift.
There were so many giggles to be heard in the room today! It was such a wonderful opportunity for our 5th graders to reminisce about their elementary school years, while our 4th graders got to learn so many fun, new things about their older peers.
FAMILIES, MARK YOUR CALENDARS! Our 5th Grade Promotion Ceremony is right around the corner!
Date: Tuesday, June 9th
Time: 12:30 p.m. start
Location: Groveton Gym
We can't wait to celebrate this amazing milestone with you all!

As we celebrate Staff Appreciation Week, we want to shine a bright spotlight on a vital member of our GES family. Today, we are sending a huge "Thank You" to our amazing school nurse, Lisa Wheelock!
From soothing scraped knees and calming upset tummies to being a steady hand for our students and staff alike, Lisa does it all with a smile. It takes a special kind of person to lead our health office with such compassion and expertise, and we truly hit the jackpot with her.
Lisa, you are a total rockstar! Thank you for keeping our Eagles healthy, safe, and ready to learn every single day.

Our 2nd and 3rd graders didn't let a little April snow chill their spirits! On Monday, April 20th, our students headed to the Montshire Museum of Science in Norwich, VT for an early end-of-year celebration.
The highlight of the day was a hands-on Force and Motion class. Our young engineers worked in teams to design and build their very own roller coasters! It took a lot of trial and error, creative thinking, and incredible teamwork to get those marbles rolling, but they rose to the challenge beautifully.
When they weren't busy building, students explored everything the museum had to offer, from the giant bubble station and brain teasers to the fascinating bee exhibit.
We are so proud of our students for showing such incredible SOAR behavior all day long. What a fantastic day of learning and discovery!

At GES, "excellence" isn't just a grade on a paper, it’s the result of a dedicated team working in harmony. As we head into Staff Appreciation Week (May 4th – May 8th), we want to take a moment to recognize that it takes every single one of us to make this school a home for our students. From the moment our students step into a clean, safe building maintained by our Custodians, to the specialized care provided by our Nurses, every detail matters. Our Teachers and Paras work hand-in-hand to spark curiosity and provide the support every child needs to succeed. We are incredibly lucky to have a staff that treats their roles not just as jobs, but as callings. You are the heartbeat of this building!
A Week of Gratitude:
To show our thanks, we have a little something planned for everyone, every day:
Monday: We're kicking things off with the Snack Cart making its rounds!
Tuesday: Keep an eye out for a Secret Gift (SAU Gift Bags) coming your way.
Wednesday: Visit the Appreciation Station to recharge and share some gratitude.
Thursday: Join us for a Pizza Lunch, a small token for the big work you do.
Friday: Close out the week with Morning Muffins and a well-deserved "thank you."
Whether you are in the classroom, the office, or the hallways, You Rock. Thank you for making GES an A+ community!

It’s a mystery that baffles the greatest minds at Groveton: How does a student arrive with two gloves and leave with one? Where do the hoodies go when the sun comes out at recess?
The evidence has been mounting in our Lost & Found all term, and the collection is, quite frankly, impressive. We have enough jackets to outfit a small army and enough lunchboxes to start a catering business.
As much as we’ve enjoyed their company, we’d love for these items to spend the upcoming vacation at your house instead of ours. Please stop by to claim your belongings this week! Any treasures left behind will be gifted to a local charity to help keep our neighbors warm and stylish this season.

Dear Northumberland Families,
I want to begin by sharing an exciting and important shift in how we are structuring leadership.
Beginning this spring, Northumberland will move to a K–12 leadership model designed to strengthen alignment, consistency, and opportunity for every child we serve. This model includes a K–12 Principal supported by two Assistant Principals, one serving our elementary school and one serving our middle/high school.
This structure allows us to operate as one unified system, ensuring that students experience a cohesive journey from kindergarten through graduation, while maintaining strong, building-level leadership and support.
With that in mind, I’m excited to share wonderful news with you.
Josh Smith has been appointed as our K–12 Principal. This is a moment of pride and promise for our district. For the past 13 years, Josh has been a dedicated and deeply valued member of the Northumberland community, including two years as an assistant principal and five impactful years as Principal of Groveton Elementary School. In that time, he has built meaningful relationships with students, families, and staff, earning trust, respect, and admiration across our schools. Simply put, our students know him, our families trust him, and our educators believe in him.
Josh is the kind of leader who lifts others up. He has a proven ability to strengthen both academic outcomes and school culture, creating environments where students feel seen, supported, and inspired to grow, and where educators feel empowered in their craft. He leads with heart, purpose, and an unwavering commitment to doing what is right for children.
As we look ahead, this appointment represents more than a leadership change. It reflects our belief that a more connected, coherent system will better serve every child. With Josh leading our K–12 system, we are taking a powerful step toward that vision.
The future is bright in Northumberland, and I’m incredibly optimistic about what we will accomplish, together.
Please join me in celebrating Josh as he steps into this role. I know he will continue to make you proud.
With gratitude and excitement,
Annie Azarloza
Superintendent
