Stark Village School News for September 22nd, 2023

Kiwanis brings new bike helmets to Stark Village School. On Tuesday morning, Mrs. Piven and Mrs. Gomes came to SVS to give bike helmets to Stark students. Mrs. Piven taught students both about the history of Kiwanis as well as its dedication to helping youth in their communities. Mrs. Piven explained that Kiwanis "is a service organization that has a group of volunteers that want to help prepare youth to become future leaders and provide service to those in our community that are in need." Students learned about how people of all ages can become members and the many activities and organizations that Kiwanis help. We are so thankful that the ladies were able to join us and for our new helmets. If anyone in your family needs a helmet, please call the school, and we will coordinate with Kiwanis to get one!

In case you wanted to get a head start on the back to school paperwork, we're sharing the link for More than Just a Meal: Free/Reduced Lunch Applications. Go to linqconnect.com and click on START MEAL APPLICATION. This application is important not only because it could provide assistance to families, but it can also help our school! As stated on the attachment, filling out the application could provide classroom resources, fund technology, as well as provide state and federal funding. You may not realize that the financial income guidelines can change year to year, so while you may not have qualified last year, this year you might. Also, your family may qualify based on household size, job status, or even housing. Please don't hesitate to fill out an application. Don't forget that you can also apply/reapply during the school year if for example, a family member lost a job or a new family member joined your family. If you have any questions please call the school at (603) 636-1092.

New staff for SAU 58 participated in new staff orientation on Aug 23rd. We toured the buildings of Stark Village School, Stratford Public School and Groveton High School. We also participated in activities to familiarize new staff with our many technology resources. Our staff stop for a picture by the Stark Covered Bridge. Welcome to SAU 58!

Thank you to the families who were able to join us at our Back to School Title 1 Math game night. While many played old favorites, others had the chance to experience the thrill of Sum Swamp for the first time! We had a great time! As a reminder, we are collecting clothes for a clothing swap this Saturday 8/26 at 6:00-7:00 PM. Feel free to drop them off at the school Thursday and Friday 9-3:00 so we can get them organized ahead of time. Also, don't forget we are watching Super Mario at 7:00 PM on Saturday!

Did your child have a massive growth spurt about 3 weeks ago? It must be all the fresh summer air! We know the beginning of the school year is hectic and our SOS (Support Our School) committee has offered to sponsor a clothing swap to help make it a bit easier. Clothing drop off will be Wednesday 8/23 - Friday 8/25, from 9-3. We will organize and have the clothes available to look through before the movie night on Saturday 8/26, between 6-7 PM. Any clothing remaining after the swap will be donated.

The Stark Public Library is offering your family the chance to have a fun night out in our community! Together, with SVS, they will be hosting a movie night at the school field on Saturday, August 26th, at 7:00 PM. Super Mario will be on the big screen and the school will be providing the popcorn! All you'll need to bring is your chair and blankets (maybe a bit of bug spray!).

Stark Village School Families and Friends, Looking for a fun activity to do with the family? Tired of playing the same old board games? Or, are you maybe looking for an excuse not to cook dinner? If any of these perked your interest, SVS would love to invite you to the school next Wednesday 8/23, for a Title 1 Math Game night. We will have card/board games focused on supporting your child's math skills and building math strategies in fun and exciting ways. We are providing pizza and would appreciate a quick email (k_landry@sau58.org) by Tuesday afternoon so that we can make sure we have enough! Looking forward to seeing you!

For the final day of Stark's Summer program the students met up with Mr. Curtis at the Berlin Fish Hatchery. There they learned about the life cycle of young trout from the fertilization of of the eggs until they are large enough to be released a year later. The fish hatchery staff showed studens how they protect their growing fish from predators like eagles, osprey, and even blue herons. The kids even got the chance to feed the fish. The Hatchery staff stay pretty busy, so if you see the fish trucks on the road in April - July, give them a wave, find your fishing pole and dig up some worms!

Stark's summer school program took a few hours to explore the ecosystem in South Pond with the help of AMC. Students scooped mud to find and identify living organisms. They even found a mayfly nymph which is only able to survive in unpoluted bodies of water! Many of the students previously thought that Christine Lake was the deepest and coldest waterbody in Stark. However, South Pond has a spot that is 95' deep and both bodies of water are able to support and sustain cold water loving fish like trout!
